Hawks win second straight

The Taylor Hawks win their second straight in convincing fashion, defeating the Mike Pero Nelson Giants 103-80.

The Hawks are now 2-0 under coach Ben Hill, and tonight it was their most dominant performance of the year, shooting 54% from the field and 42% from three.

Tony Tolovae top scored with 21 points, which included multiple dunks, Everard Bartlett had 19, and point guard Jarrod Kenny dished out 13 assists for the Hawks who improve to 3-6 for the season, putting them back in the hunt for a potential semi-final spot, which looked unlikely to start the season.

It was always going to be a difficult task for the Giants who were without their leading scorer and point guard Kyle Adnam. Nelson decided to bring Phill Jones out of retirement for game number 407, but the 43-year-old only played eight minutes.

Finn Delany registered 21 points, Sam Dempster had 14, and struggling with foul trouble for most of the game, Dion Prewster, scored 13 for the Giants who drop to 3-9.

Nelson did make a solid start to the game, taking a 23-22 lead at quarter break. But a 33-16 second quarter from the home side gave them a comfortable buffer which they then extended in second half, leading by as many as 24 points.

Next week will arguably be the most important for the Hawks if they wish to make a push for the playoffs when they travel to Invercargill to play the Sharks next Thursday, then return home to host the James Blond Supercity Rangers on Saturday.

Nelson will play at home to the Rangers this coming Friday.
