Aon New Zealand U17s unable to get past Canada at FIBA World Cup

The Aon New Zealand Under 17s showed some consistent effort throughout the contest, but Canada proved too strong in their 61-97 loss on Wednesday morning.

Canada burst out to a big 26-12 lead after the first quarter, but some steady play in the second and third quarters by New Zealand kept it respectable. Canada, however, would go on a 31-12 run to close out the game and remain undefeated.

New Zealand’s 3-point shooting showed some improvement, as they finished 9-of-30 (30 per cent) from distance. Tom Cowie and Marvin Williams-Dunn managed two 3-pointers each.

Mitchell Dance finished with 13 points and seven rebounds to lead New Zealand, while Shalom Broughton, Cowie and Williams-Dunn all scored nine points. Anzac Rissetto reeled in nine rebounds in his 27 minutes of work, too.

Head Coach Dave Bublitz said the score didn’t reflect the effort New Zealand displayed.

“Canada started well shooting 6-of-9 from three in the first quarter. We battled well in the second and third quarter, then let the score get away from us in the fourth.

“Our next opponent, France, are the favorites to meet the USA in the final. They’re very long, athletic and skilled.

“It will be a massive challenge that the boys are looking forward to. To play two of the top three teams in the world within 36 hours is exciting,” said Bublitz.

New Zealand finished the group phase 0-3, but they’ll be back in action tomorrow morning in the Round of 16. France is currently undefeated and came out on top of Group D.
