We are saddened to hear that the great Brian Cotton passed away last Thursday (25 October 2018).
He played for Nelson and Wellington, and New Zealand in 1954 and 1955 (the first team to tour overseas), 1957 1958 and 1959.
Brian's family also embraced the game. His daughter Sam was a NZ Junior representation. His brother Charlie also represented Nelson and NZ in 1965 and 1966. Charlie's daughter Rebecca was a Tall Fern for many years. Brian and Charlie's mother used to crochet hats with pompoms for the Nelson team in the appropriate colour of blue – Nelson colours. New members also received one of these hats, such was the basketball-community spirit of the family.
Famously, Brian is said to be the first New Zealand player to perfect the jump shot to be one of the first in the country to use it. He used it to shoot over another great Nelson player Frank Baldwin who stood at 6'5". Brian was 6'2"
Our thoughts are with Brian’s family.
