Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Lance McLoughlin, a legend of basketball in New Zealand. Lance passed away on 28 December at the Althorp Scott Home in Tauranga.
McLoughlin is the only person we know of that was a national player, national coach and international-level referee.
He played for New Zealand is 1959, 1962 and 1963. He also played for Wellington and Hutt Valley.
McLoughlin was known to be a gifted coach, particularly when working with the young players, especially in the Hutt Valley. As a coach he was very patient, encouraging and an advocate for strong fundamentals. He was a superb tactical analyst, and always did his homework before games, knowing full well his opponents strengths and weaknesses.
McLoughlin was the New Zealand coach of the first U18 Junior women’s tour to Australian State Championships.
One of the Basketball New Zealand awards in named after him – the Lance McLoughlin Trophy for Female Junior Player of the Year.
McLoughlin was involved with teams that recorded seven national titles over the span of twelve years. He also fostered eight young players into the New Zealand teams.
He refereed at all levels, including international were he refereed the NZ v NZ Americans in August 1977.
McLoughlin’s daughter Ann became a Junior Tall Fern in 1974. She then became a senior Tall Fern 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1988. Betty, his first wife, was Captain of the New Zealand team in 1962. Jan, his second wife, was a New Zealand player (1971, 1975, 1977).
