World Master Games – 2017

World Master Games – 2017

What is WMG 2017?

It is an international multi-sport festival likely to attract over 25,000 participants to the Auckland region. It will be the biggest event New Zealand will host for at least the next decade with athletes and supporters expected from more than 100 countries. There are 28 different sports in the programme.

When?

April 21-30, 2017. This is the second week of the April school holidays.

Who can take part?

Other than minimum age criteria (30 years old and above for basketballers), there is generally no qualification requirements.

Different grades

In both the Women's and Men's competitions there are three different grades in each 5-10 years age band - A grade, B grade and Social grade. We are expecting close to 200 teams to register across all grades and gender.

Venues

A-Grade games will be played at North Shore Events Centre.
B-Grade games will be played at AUT Sports Centre, North Shore.
Social Grades will be played at the Bruce Pullman Centre, Papakura.

How to get involved?

Volunteer and participant applications will open on 22 February 2016 and individuals will be able to complete this on the website www.worldmastersgames2017.co.nz. Alternatively email Mike Lacey mikelaceywmg@gmail.co.nz.

People can participate in one or more of the 28 sports – of course we hope you will choose to be involved in basketball as a player, referee or volunteer. You can also sign up for updates on the WMG website.

What volunteer roles will there be?

There will be 4000 volunteers required across all sports and we estimate that approximately 200 will be required for basketball alone. Our largest need will be table officials (scorers, timekeepers, 24 secs clock operators).

Minimum age requirement

Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age (as at 31.12.16). Exceptions can be made if someone under 17 is a capable table official or referee.

Will I be paid?

Volunteers will not be paid but will receive full training, WMG2017 volunteer uniforms and refreshments during each shift.

Referees

We will require approximately 150 referees who will be paid for their services. Register on the World Masters Games website or contact Referees Recruitment & Development Officer Dan Darwick daniel@basketball.org.nz
