2020 Women’s Development League EOI

Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) is now accepting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the 2020 Women’s Development League (D-League) which will replace the WBC Division Two competition.

The D-League will come with a set of unique rules that help to position the competition as a priority for players seeking a more defined pathway through to the National League and the Tall Ferns.

This competition will cater for between 8 and 12 teams from across New Zealand and aims to provide an affordable and sustainable environment for competing teams.

The 2020 D-League will feature:

  • between 8 and 12 teams.
  • 4 tournament weekends / includes the season opener and finals.
  • 2 x South Island tournaments / 2 x North Island tournaments.
  • starts early May / ends early July.
  • annual league fee of $3,000 (plus GST).

The 2020 D-League rules:

  • players must be aged 25 years and under – players cannot turn 26 years old during the defined season (including finals).
  • teams can have 3 restricted players. A restricted player is classed as someone over the age of 25.
  • teams can have 1 player living permanently in New Zealand who can not represent New Zealand under FIBA rules. This is not in addition to the restricted player rule.
  • payments to any players are not allowed. A list of permitted allowances that can be paid for will be made available.
