FIBA Confirms Dates and Locations for Key Events in 2023

Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) is excited to share the confirmed dates and locations for several upcoming FIBA tournaments in 2023 – all featuring our national team athletes at a variety of levels.

The FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup will be held in Singapore from 27 March – 2 April 2023, with both the 3×3 Tall Blacks and 3×3 Tall Ferns in attendance. The 3×3 Tall Blacks finished second at the 3×3 Asia Cup back in 2022, while the 3×3 Tall Ferns won gold for the first time in 2018.

The FIBA Women’s Asia Cup will be held in Sydney, Australia on 26 June to 2 July 2023. This 5 on 5 event will be the fourth time the Tall Ferns have competed at the FIBA Asia Cup, with the squad finishing fifth at the 2021 edition in Jordan.

A top four finish for the Tall Ferns at this Cup ensures them entry into the Olympic Qualifiers in February 2024 – which is one step closer to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship will be held from 10-16 July 2023 in Amman, Jordan. The New Zealand U15 Girl’s team qualified for this event by finishing second at the U15 Oceania Champions in Guam in November 2022.

Placing in the top four of the U16 Asian Championship will qualify New Zealand for the pinnacle age group event – the U17 World Cup in 2024.

The FIBA U16 Men’s Asian Championship will be held from 17 – 24 September 2023 in Doha, Qatar. The New Zealand U15 Boy’s team finished second at last year’s U15 Oceania Champions in Guam, which qualified them for this event.

And by finishing in the top four of the Asian Championships this year, the squad will also qualify for the pinnacle U17 World Cup in 2024.

In addition, the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea has had a date change by FIBA; it will now be held from 2 – 7 October 2023. This change of date helps ensure that players from the NZ Secondary School Nationals in September will be available to participate in this key age group event.

If the U17 men’s and women’s teams can finish in the top two at this event, they will qualify for the U18 Asian Championships in 2024.
