Huw Beynon named as new Tall Blacks Manager

With Andrew Dewhurst moving on from the Tall Blacks Manager role, Basketball New Zealand has appointed Huw Beynon as his replacement.

Beynon has been one of New Zealand’s foremost basketball journalists and broadcasters. In his roles at TV3 (now Newshub), Crowd Goes Wild, and Sky Sport, he’s been in across the game at all levels in Aotearoa. He brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the history of the Tall Blacks, and the culture within the team, to the role.

“It’s a real honour to be appointed as the new Tall Blacks Manager. Filling the hole left by Andrew will be a great challenge, but one I relish and look forward to taking on. The Tall Blacks mean a great deal to me, and while I begrudgingly admit my window for selection as a player is perhaps coming to a close… maybe, I look forward to doing my bit off the court to ensure the ongoing success of the team.”

Beynon will also be joining Basketball New Zealand as the NBL Media Manager for 2021, working with the League’s commentators and assisting in other communications projects during the year.

Basketball New Zealand GM Communications, Joe Wallace, says Beynon will be a great asset to the team.

“Huw’s well known and respected in basketball circles and the wider sport sector. Last year he commentated nearly every Sal’s NBL Showdown, Schick 3X3 Cup, and the Sal’s NBL 18IN18 game through Sky Sport – so his work ethic can be described as unstoppable. Huw worked closely with BBNZ during that time and he’s already become a trusted member of the team. His media skills, good relationship with players, media and staff, and his extensive knowledge of the game in New Zealand will be tremendous assets. The High Performance team are thrilled to have Huw in the Tall Blacks camp where we are sure he will thrive as Manager. Former Manager Andrew Dewhurst was one of a number who backed Huw’s appointment and he will be helping Huw step into that busy role. We’re really looking forward to Huw joining us for 2021.”

Beynon begins the role in February.
