With just two games remaining in this inaugural 3×3 Trans-Tasman competition, one series has been decided while the other is all squared up – making for an exciting Saturday night for 3×3 basketball fans.
The 3×3 Tall Blacks took out both of their games tonight, the first a 21-19 win that saw Taki Fahrensohn make the game-winning layup; while the combo of Dom Kelman-Poto and Chris McIntosh’s scoring in the second game ensured an emphatic series win.
The 3×3 Tall Ferns faced a rougher road tonight, losing both of their games to an undermanned Gangurrus women’s side. They dropped their first game in overtime, before falling 12-15 in the second – setting up an exciting finish for one of these teams on Saturday night.
Men’s Series – Day 3 Recaps
Game 5 – NZL 21, AUS 19
The 3×3 Tall Blacks have earned a hard-fought 21-19 win over the Australian Gangurrus, in game 5 of the 3×3 Trans-Tasman series. All four Kiwis contributed strongly in this one, led by Taki Fahrensohn’s 7pts & 7reb, along with 6pts from Dom Kelman-Poto – the latter setting Taki up for the game-winning layup with 3 seconds left. Denhym Brooke and Chris McIntosh added 4pts & 4reb apiece in this game, helping NZ to secure a 17-13 rebounding advantage. Australia was led by James O’Donnell’s 7pts & 4reb, with Jacob Furphy adding 5pts & 3 key assists. Dan Trist chipped in with 5 & 3 of his own, Josh Dent 2.

Game 6 – NZL 21, AUS 9
The 3×3 Tall Blacks have closed out the 3×3 Trans-Tasman men’s series tonight, with their 21-11 victory giving New Zealand an unassailable 5-1 lead. Chris McIntosh led the Kiwis with 8pt on 4/6 shooting from outside, with Dom Kelman-Poto adding 8 on his own on 5/6 shooting. Taki Fahrensohn scored 4 and Denhym Brooke 1. Dan Trist led the Gangurrus with his 5pts, while Josh Dent and James O’Donnell scored 3 apiece.

Women’s Series – Day 3 Recaps
Game 5 – NZL 16, AUS 17
The Australian Gangurrus have picked up a stunning 17-16 win over New Zealand in Game 5 of the 3×3 Trans-Tasman Series. Despite being reduced to 3 players – with Bride Kennedy-Hopoate out with illness – the Aussies came from behind to earn the thrilling overtime win. Australia was led by 8pts & 6reb from Jacqui Trotto, while Mikhaela Cann added 5 & 5; Teyla Evans with 4 as the Gangurrus outrebounded NZ 19-12. Chevannah Paalvast scored 7pts for the 3×3 Tall Ferns on 5/8 shooting, while Kendell Heremaia and Olivia O’Neill each added 4 – Olivia with the tough 2-pointer to force overtime. Azure Anderson added 1.

Game 6 – NZL 12, AUS 15
The Australian Gangurrus have squared up the 3×3 Trans-Tasman Women’s Series at 3-all tonight, following their gritty 15-12 win over the 3×3 Tall Ferns in Game 6. Despite again playing with just 3 players, the Aussies dominated at the free throw line – making 9-9 from the charity stripe to aid their win. Mikhaela Cann scored 5pt & 8reb, while Jacqui Trotto and Teyla Evans scored 5 apiece. For New Zealand, Chevannah Paalvast scored 5pts to go with 8reb; Lauryn Hippolite with 4, Azure Anderson with 3 & 6 and Olivia O’Neill adding 5reb.
