BNZ Community Coaching Hub
Basketball is thriving across Aotearoa. More tamariki than ever are picking up a ball and falling in love with the game. To keep that momentum going, we need more coaches and volunteers to support them.
Right now, around 70% of kids drop out of organised sport by age 13, and girls drop out at twice the rate of boys. A positive coaching experience can change that.
You don’t need to be a pro to be a coach. What matters most is showing up and helping young people feel supported. Together with our Community Coaching Partner BNZ, we’ve got everything you need to get started.
Whether you’re helping your tamarikiimprove in the back yard, at the local court, or coaching a school team, find out what community coaching actually looks like and how easy it is to take the first step.
Looking for resources, session plans, or your next development opportunity? Everything you need to keep growing as a coach is right here.
Not ready to coach just yet? Community basketball runs on more than just coaches. If you want to support the game without stepping into a coaching role, we’ve got opportunities for you too.
Every coach, player and whānau deserves a safe, welcoming environment, on and off the court. When players feel safe and supported, their confidence grows, their wellbeing improves, and their connections to whānau and communities grow stronger.
Basketball New Zealand is committed to building a coaching community that reflects the diversity of Aotearoa, where everyone feels backed to do their best.
CoachMate is Basketball New Zealand’s official all-in-one coaching app, built for volunteer coaches, parents and teachers at every level. No more trawling YouTube or digging up outdated PDFs for training ideas. Everything you need is right there, saving you time and helping you show up as a more confident, prepared coach, whether it’s your first season or your fifteenth.
When coaches feel supported, they thrive, and so do their players.
Local Associations are the heart of community basketball. They run the teams, competitions and programmes that bring the game to life. Whether you want to get involved, ask a question, or just find out what’s happening near you, your local Association is a great place to start.
