Sport NZ’s community guidance portal and eLearning modules for safe and inclusive sport and recreation are now available for the Basketball Community to complete.
Sport is run by passionate volunteers who want to protect the interests of those taking part. To help volunteers and employees at all levels of the sector, Sport NZ has developed a community guidance portal with tools, resources and eLearning modules that are free of charge and designed to help everyone learn more about how they can contribute to a safe and inclusive sport and recreation environment.
In addition to guidance and resources on child protection, member protection, equity and inclusion and organisational culture, the portal also includes eLearning modules relating to inclusion, child protection, and competition manipulation, as well as new child safeguarding policies and procedures and member protection policies. These are available free of charge to anyone at any level involved in sport and active recreation, including parents, caregivers, whānau, coaches, administrators, and participants. Basketball New Zealand is encouraging all our volunteers and employees to visit the community guidance portal and complete the eLearning modules on our Basketball New Zealand SportTutor LMS here. The online learning modules take about one hour to complete and a brief overview of them can be found below.
Child protection in play, active recreation and sport
It is vital that we protect wellbeing and safety of children and young people in sport and recreation and in all other aspects of their lives. That includes knowing how to identify the signs of potential abuse and neglect and know what to do about it. Sport NZ’s eLearning module on child protection in play, active recreation and sport is based on an existing proven module from Safeguarding Children and adapted to be more specific to play, active recreation and sport. It is designed to give learners the tools to recognise, respond, report and record signs of potential abuse and neglect.
This course is for anyone who engages with children and young people in any play, active recreation and sport setting in both paid and volunteer roles. This includes, but is not limited to, roles such as coaches, umpires/referees, parent helpers, participants, supporters, family members, managers, support personnel, volunteers, administrators, board/committee members, sports coordinators, lifeguards, trainers, instructors, dance teachers and club leaders.
Inclusion: A Response to Discrimination
Safe and enjoyable sport and recreation experiences are the right of every participant. Everyone should be encouraged to participate and enjoy play, active recreation and sport without prejudice, in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Sport NZ’s eLearning module how to identify discrimination and respond to it will give learners the tools to respond appropriately to instances of discrimination and to support those who may be facing discrimination.
This course is relevant for participants, supporters, volunteers, administrators, support personnel, family members, coaches, trainers, instructors, teachers, and anyone who wants to promote inclusivity in play, active recreation and sport.
Protecting against competition manipulation
This e-learning module will help you identify how competition manipulation, such as match-fixing, can occur and the threats it brings to individuals and their competition or sport. Whatever your level of involvement is in active recreation and sport, there’s a chance you or someone you know could be impacted by dishonest or corrupt people. We all need to play a role in ensuring our competitions are fair and just. This module will give you a good start to understanding about competition manipulation and its implications.
This course is relevant for participants, supporters, volunteers, administrators, support personnel, family members, coaches, trainers, instructors, teachers, and anyone who wants to keep competitions fair.
Sport NZ will be adding more information to the community portal on an ongoing basis and will continue working with the sector to assist with the development and implementation of policies, guidelines, more eLearning and other practical resources. If you have any feedback on the portal or the eLearning, please email integrity@sportnz.org.nz.
