Last month Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) co-hosted a Coach Developer Residential at Auckland’s AUT Millennium Institute of Sport.
With the title of ‘Diving In’, the Coach Developer Residential was an exciting initiative in partnership with Swimming NZ and Hockey NZ, which saw 20 people attend over three days – including six new basketball coach developers.
People Development Lead, Amy McClintock says that developing coaches is a key priority for BBNZ as the sport continues to grow in popularity across Aotearoa.
“As the number of basketball participants across the country continues to rise at a rapid rate, attention is now turning to providing a high level of support and ongoing development for our coaches – so we’re placing more emphasis on developing these Coach Developers,” says McClintock.
“This is a key part of our approach to growing and improving our coaching workforce and the support we’re able to provide to our Associations. And the coach development systems we’re building – and the workforce who are working with our coaches to implement it – will be a key part of the new coaching framework that’s being developed by the Coach Leadership Group.”
This Residential follows on from a Community Coach Developer course that was held by BBNZ in Canterbury at the end of May, with 13 coaches from the region and Southern Zone attending. McClintock says that this course was designed to encourage a locally-led approach to coach development, supplementing the work already being undertaken at a national level.
“The participants who attended this training are now in a position where they can positively influence the community coaches in their local clubs. Each coach developer has illustrated a keen desire to pass on their knowledge and experience and, in turn, help to stretch and grow others through positive experiences.
“Coaches who are more confident of their abilities, getting more support around them, and being part of something larger will generally be happier in their job, get more satisfaction out of it, and may well want to come back again next season.
“We’re excited to have another layer of the coach developer network in action and are looking forward to seeing how this investment impacts on the experiences of the coach, as well as the experiences of the player.
