Basketball New Zealand is proud to be partnering with Poitūkohu Māori in a Mana Ōrite Agreement (MOA) to support and help the continued growth of Māori Basketball in Aotearoa.
On day one of the 2025 Māori Basketball Nationals in Rotorua, Basketball New Zealand sent our Chief Executive, Dillon Boucher and Board Member Toko Kapea to sign and celebrate this momentous occasion.
The MOA sets out to help the growth and kaupapa of Māori Basketball in Aotearoa in a number of ways, both on the court and off the court.
Boucher says Basketball New Zealand is well aware of how special this agreement is.
“We know how important this relationship is and we’re excited to kick it off and get it going.
We’re excited to work with Māori Basketball. They run an amazing tournament, but it’s not just at the tournament we want to support them, we want to support them throughout the year. Through coaching, referee development, through player development to be able to help support that pathway for Māori to be able to go on if they want to progress to elite basketball or to international basketball.”
The Poitūkohu Māori National tournament is currently one of the biggest basketball tournaments in the motu, and the MOA between Basketball New Zealand is already in full swing.
At this year’s edition of the tournament, sports management software GameDay was used effectively and with great success.
“2025 was a year of growth for our whakataetae as we embraced the features GameDay has to offer,” says Poitūkohu Māori Communications & Events Manager, Marsella Hippolite.
“GameDay brought significant efficiencies, from reducing paper use to providing real time data on iwi participation. We particularly love how GameDay has an app and website version for viewing tournament draws, with an intuitive display of information that makes for a better user experience. Additionally, we are committed to exploring opportunities to integrate te reo Māori within GameDay.”
GameDay’s Ross Wilson is thrilled to see the support his company can offer come to life!
“GameDay is thrilled to support Poitūkohu Māori o Aotearoa (PMA) in conjunction with Basketball NZ for their recent 2025 National Basketball Tournament.
With over 3000 participants, and 372 teams participating in 51 grades, GameDay was able to work with PMA to automate fixture generation and scheduling, integrate with key partners for capturing results/statistics in real time and publish this information online via the GameDay App to keep participants and fans updated and engaged, streamlining their operations and improving the participant experience.
We are proud to be a part of their journey and look forward to seeing the positive impact our collaboration will bring in the future.”
Basketball New Zealand is excited to see where our MOA with Poitūkohu Māori o Aotearoa can impact in the very near future, and beyond!
