Basketball New Zealand has been announced as a finalist for the annual New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards, which celebrate excellence and leadership by individuals and organisations working in community sport and active recreation.
Under the Event Excellence category, BBNZ was recognised for the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers and the Tall Blacks vs China test match at Spark Arena, which saw a packed house come in and celebrate.
The other nominees are the AIMS Games for the Anchor AIMS Games International Sporting Championship and Waka Ama New Zealand for the 2018 Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Waka Ama Sprint Nationals.
The FIBA World Cup qualifiers resulted in fantastic media-coverage, increased commercial support, fan engagement and the biggest international basketball game to ever be hosted in New Zealand. BBNZ worked with a wide range of partners to make the event happen including SKYCITY, ATEED, Major Events, Media partners including Chinese-media TV33 and SkyKiwi, the Breakers, Go Media, Tall Blacks sponsors Security Placements and MBO, Molten, Ganten, Sujon, Benesports, Mai FM, Trust funders, FIBA, PEAK, Tourism New Zealand, the New Zealand Chinese Association and others.
David Crocker, Executive Director at FIBA Oceania, said the China game was brilliant example of how to put on a basketball match.
“In window three of FIBA World Cup Qualifying we had 88 games in 39 Arenas around the globe and the game in Auckland between the Tall Blacks and China was a highlight. A great crowd of over 9000 with a strong Chinese attendance, watched not only a great game but were entertained by a quality the event delivered by Basketball New Zealand. BBNZ set world class standards in the delivery of the event marketing, ticketing strategy and game entertainment that FIBA as an International body were not only very impressed by, but we very proud of.”
The New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards will be held in Auckland on 24 June and see 22 finalists vying for five main awards: Community Impact, Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion, Event Excellence, Commercial Partnership and the Future Leaders’ Scholarship.
Chair of the judging panel, Diana Puketapu, said the panel was highly impressed by the calibre of entries in each award category.
“The entries and our finalists are an encouraging indicator of the increasingly diverse ways in which the sector is working to get more people physically active and improve wellbeing, and how the sector is responding to our changing society.”
The Future Leaders Scholarship, introduced last year, will see $10,000 awarded to an individual who has shown a proven track record of leadership and potential to make a major contribution to the sporting sector.
Meanwhile the Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Award has been introduced as a new category this year.
Sport NZ CEO Peter Miskimmin said it’s important that Sport NZ and the sector evolve with society and that these awards reflect the great work partners are doing.
“The Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Award is a great example of this. Ensuring more women and girls realise their potential in and through sport and active recreation is a key priority for Sport NZ. The applications have highlighted some fantastic examples of how partners are driving collective action across women and girls and disability, helping to develop a more inclusive society.”
Miskimmin added that these are special awards for the sports sector.
“Basketball New Zealand is a very worthy finalist for the Event Excellence Award and I look forward to having them join us for the New Zealand Sport & Recreation Awards on 24 June.”
Winners will be announced at the NZ Sport and Recreation Awards dinner on Monday 24 June 2019, held in Auckland at the Cordis Hotel to coincide with the Sport NZ Connections Conference.

In addition to the shortlisting for the above categories, the judges considered nominations for the C.K. Doig Leadership Award. Recipients of all awards will be announced at the award ceremony on 24 June.
The judging panel comprised Diana Puketapu (Chair), Sir John Wells, Peter Miskimmin, Andrew Leslie, Sarah Beaman and Maddi McLean.
