John Carley has been actively involved in serving the Taranaki basketball community across many voluntary roles.
It started with him refereeing the game for 33 years from 1982 until 2015 when he blew his whistle for the final time. For 16 of those years he was on the NBL’s referees panel. From 1985 to 1990 he was a scorebench official for Taranaki NBL games and again from 2005-2023, a total of 24 years’ service.
He has spent 13 years leading the stats team for NBL games, a role he still fulfils for Airs games.
In recent times John has been actively involved in the new Regional Sporting Organisation – Basketball Taranaki. In 2019 he was appointed to the Basketball Taranaki establishment board and remains on the board.
He is also a Life Member of the New Plymouth Basketball Association and a current committee member.
As mentioned in the impressive bio, John starting his voluntary duties back in 1982, qualifies him for a 40-Years’ Long Service pin.
