John Zimmerman receives his second award of the night as we recognise his 40 years’ service to the game.
John began his basketball days in 1965 when he first played in Waitara. He then played for Inglewood High School and this subsequently led to him becoming President of Inglewood Basketball Club, at a time when the club had as many as 14 teams. Recognised as the strongest club in the region at the time Inglewood boasted a couple of Taranaki Championships.
He held the President position until he moved to New Plymouth in 1987, subsequently being made a Life Member of the club.
On the New Plymouth scene, he is actively involved with his daughter Shelley in developing young referees from ages 7 and up. He mentors in the Taranaki Secondary School competition and is an encouraging figure in all the schools competitions in the New Plymouth and Taranaki region.
40 years on and John still pulls out the whistle and gym shoes to help out when required.
John is a deserving recipient of a 40-years Long Service Award
