Marshall Seifert | 2025

The Murray McMahon Award, presented to recognize an outstanding contribution to men’s basketball.

Marshall Seifert has a long history with the game and was nominated by the Otago Basketball Association. We can date his first contribution back to the late 60’s, when he was a key member of the Otago men’s team that won the NZ Zone Championship in 1968.

He soon transitioned to coaching and in the early 70’s took the reins of the New Zealand Junior Men’s team, nurturing a generation of exceptionally talented players.

From 1973 to 78 he would coach the Otago Men’s team and the U20 Otago men’s team and just for good measure the Otago University and NZ University Tournament men’s teams, winning a number of championships in that time.

Marshall would go on to lend his expertise to the media, spending time in the 80’s and early 90’s behind the microphone, working on the then Rheineck NZ Basketball League as a TV and Radio commentator, in the process winning the 1993 Mobil Radio Award for Best Sports Presenter, commentator or contributor for his work with 4ZB.

Marshall was also the recipient of a 30-year long-service to Basketball pin and plaque.
