Tonight we acknowledge the long and lasting contribution Rodney King has made to basketball in New Zealand.
Former FIBA referee Rodney King retired from active officiating in 2006 after 46 years of whistle blowing. One of New Zealand’s finest referees Rodney also devoted much of his time to coach education and administration at local, national and international level.
His commitment to coach education saw him preparing course material for the BBNZ Referees and Table Officials courses and examinations.
With an eye for detail from preparing these courses, added to his professional background in the banking industry, Rodney has in recent years turned his attention to aiding the Basketball Foundation.
Rodney undertakes numerous tasks for the Foundation including:
Maintaining the membership database and formulating the quarterly newsletters. He provides detail on past basketball players, coaches and contributors for the BBNZ AGM and newsletters.
Rodney is the author of “In the Hotspot” – a history of basketball refereeing in New Zealand. He processes orders for his book and the catalogue of the other publications that BBNZ holds stock of.
Being involved in genealogy he has provided critical assistance to the Foundation in their various archiving projects a project that is ongoing and highly valued by the Foundation and the wider basketball community.
A very willing supporter of basketball and especially the Foundation Rodney King is a deserved recipient of the Star Award.
