Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) are pleased to announce the eight Kiwi athletes who will be attending the 2022 Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia camp in Canberra from 7-10 August 2022.
The eight New Zealand-based participants are: Dontae Russo-Nance, Kaia Berridge, Kalid Petzer, Lilly Taulelei, Maia Jones, Waimanu Clarken, William Passi and William Shortt.
They will be among the 60 top boys and girls aged under-18 – selected from over 15 countries across Asia-Pacific – to attend the 12th edition of the BWB Asia camp, which this year is being held at the NBA Global Academy at the Australia Institute of Sports in Canberra and is a joint project between the NBA and FIBA.
Each camper will get an opportunity to learn from current and former NBA, WNBA and FIBA players in the camp, as well as competing alongside their peers from across the region; they will also take part in life skills, leadership development and community service programme.
Leading this year’s mentors for the BWB are NBA players Jarrett Allen (2022 NBA All-Star for the Cleveland Cavaliers; U.S.), Josh Green (Dallas Mavericks; Australia), Cameron Johnson (Phoenix Suns; U.S.) and Coby White (Chicago Bulls; U.S.). WNBA players Kristi Harrower and Annie La Fleur and Australian national team player Jenni Screen coaches are also on tap to help guide the attendees through a variety of basketball activities.
These players and coaches will lead campers through a variety of activities, including movement efficiency drills, offensive and defensive skill stations, three-point contests, 5-on-5 games, and life skills and leadership development sessions.
A ceremony on the final day of the camp will award the BWB Asia 2022 MVP, Defensive MVP, Three-Point Champion and the Patrick Baumann Sportsmanship Award to the boys and girls who distinguish themselves on the court and as leaders.
