Basketball New Zealand and the Tall Blacks are incredibly proud of the announcement that head coach, Judd Flavell, has accepted an international coaching opportunity.
As an organisation, we’re excited for the opportunity that has presented itself to Judd. He’s a one of the best coaches New Zealand has produced, and this being recognised at an international level was only a matter of time.
Judd will remain at the helm for the Tall Blacks, and we’re excited for the new lessons and experiences that Judd can bring back into our national team environment.
He has our full support, and we couldn’t be prouder to see him taking another big step in his coaching journey.
“I’m very excited at the prospect of this new international opportunity and am looking forward to what this next stop on my coaching journey will bring.”
Coach Flavell relishing the opportunity to take on this next challenge whilst also re-affirming his commitment to the black singlet.
“I’m still very much committed and focussed on my role with the Tall Blacks. I’ve never shied away from my love for this team, and I am extremely proud of what we’ve built over the past couple of years.”
His 13-7 record as head coach of the Tall Blacks to date, has included some historic wins. In game three of the Trans-Tasman Throwdown, the Tall Blacks beat the Australian Boomers, 106-97, to secure just their tenth victory over their arch-rivals.
The team’s 22-point comeback victory during the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup over Lebanon, also another huge highlight under Flavell’s reign.
We have no doubt we’ll continue to see historic Tall Blacks results with Judd in charge, and wait with anticipation for the Tall Blacks next window in July, where they play two home games in Tāmaki Makaurau against the Philippines and Guam.
“I can’t wait to continue on this journey with the Tall Blacks as we build for LA28.”
And no question, Flavell’s men will continue to build on their momentum going forward, with their eyes set on a long-awaited return to the bright lights of the Olympic Games.
