BBNZ Classic Match #11: 2018 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup | Belarus vs. New Zealand

New Zealand qualified for the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup after finishing fourth at the 2017 FIBA Asian Championship held in India. Their fourth place finish was a historic occasion as it would be the first FIBA Age-Group World Cup ever attended by a junior women’s side from New Zealand.

After four consecutive losses to start the tournament (two of those narrow defeats to Hungary and Argentina), the kiwi side came up against host nation Belarus in the classification round of matches. Despite a vocal home crowd cheering on the Belarusians, the kiwi side was able to notch another record, securing New Zealand’s first win at a women’s FIBA Age-Group World Cup.

With the hosts up by one at the halftime break, the New Zealanders would bounce back impressively in the second stanza, outscoring their opponents 45-30.

The young kiwi side would go on to finish the pinnacle event in a very respectable 12th place.

Belarus 59
New Zealand 73
