Performance Support

Basketball New Zealand have initiated a national strategy for injury prevention in basketball, which we will be rolling out some educational programmes at our National Camps.

Our objective is to be aligned with the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) and other National Sports Organisations (NSOs) such as Rugby, Netball, Football, and Rugby League in a nation-wide injury prevention programme: SportSmart. Our aim is to impart the knowledge so that our players can be independent in utilising these important injury prevention strategies.

We are currently working on creating a basketball specific SportSmart programme, however until then please head to the following links for more information:

At our National Age Groups Camps, we are looking to trial some key injury prevention strategies with off-court theory sessions followed by practical on-court sessions focusing on pre- and post-workout topics as well as Strength & Conditioning exercises to improve core muscle groups. We have asked our experts in these areas to develop, promote, and deliver these sessions:

  • Anousith Bouaaphone, BBNZ Lead Physiotherapist. Anousith brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as a physiotherapist. He has also been part of the Basketball New Zealand family as the physiotherapist for the Tall Blacks, and the New Zealand Breakers for many years. He now leads our Health Services Programme and runs his physiotherapy business on the North Shore of Auckland.
  • Claire Dallison, BBNZ Lead Strength & Conditioning Coach. Claire teaches Applied Fitness at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, has over 25 years of experience in the fitness industry as a trainer alongside running her own business in exercise based rehabilitation in Nelson. Claire has been part of the Basketball New Zealand family for many years as the trainer and team manager for the Tall Blacks as well as the Nelson Giants.

The two main tools used throughout the programme are Foam Rollers and Resistance Bands. There is a limited stock available for purchase, which is only available to players in the National Programme.

  • Foam Roller: $25
  • Resistance Band: $20
  • Roller and Band Bundle: $40
