Schick Championships Day Two wrap-up

The ‘A’ Boys and Girls Tournaments at the 2019 Schick Secondary Schools National Championships has reached the half-way point with day two completed and there are already a couple of semi-final berths secured.

With one round to play, St Kevin’s College has a perfect 4-0 record and can’t be overhauled at the top of Pool A in the ‘A’ Boys competition.

Opunake High School and Te Aroha College, runners-up in 2018, both have 3-1 records – their clash at 9:00am tomorrow is in effect a quarter-final, as the winner progresses to the semi-final and the loser will contest the minor placings.

Mana College and Manukura are unbeaten in Pool B with four straight wins apiece and are therefore semi-final bound ahead of their matchup on Wednesday morning.

Mercury Bay Area School and Tararua College played the last game of the day, but both had already booked a place in Wednesday’s semi-final. Entering the game, the two had 3-0 records in ‘A’ Girls Pool A, but it was Mercury Bay that grabbed the win (65-57), albeit a close one.

Kavanagh College (4-0) are also semi-final bound in Pool B, where they will be joined by Te Aroha who boast an identical record.

News from the second day of the ‘AA’ at the Schick Champs is that defending girls champions St Peter’s School, Cambridge are on course for a semi-final berth.

The favourites in Pool A have been boosted by the arrival of Tall Fern Charlisse Leger-Walker, although her absence hasn’t stopped St Peter’s cruising to three wins. Manukura is the other unbeaten team in their pool.

In Pool B, Westlake Girls’ High School and Sacred Heart Girls College, New Plymouth lead the way with three victories from three outings.

Two teams have a perfect record in Pool C. St Mary’s College, Ponsonby and Christchurch Girls’ High School the two teams with the clean slate.

The teams in Pool D have completed four games each and it is Hamilton Girls High and Queen Margaret College that remain unscathed at 4-0.

Also with four games completed are the six teams in Pool A of the ‘AA’ Boys Tournament.

St Kentigern College was pushed by Mount Albert Grammar and Middleton Grange School but came out on top in both battles to sit pretty atop their pool with four wins.

Napier Boys’ High School are also undefeated, their match-up with St Kent’s to decide top billing should be a cracker.

Pool B favours Rotorua Boys’ High School, who came back from a 19-point deficit to beat Scots College 76-72 and end the day with three wins and zero losses. Behind them are Cashmere High School and St Patrick’s College, Silverstream who’re both 2-1.

In Pool C, Westlake Boys’ High School and defending champions Rosmini College have three straight wins, although both have come close to losing. Rosmini was 10 points down to St Patrick’s Kilbirnie before squeezing home 79-74 and Westlake were taken to the wire by Tauranga Boys before prevailing 100-94.

Rangitoto College (3-0) edged local rivals Auckland Grammar (2-1) 86-83 this morning. St John’s College, Hamilton are also without a loss, with games against both Rangitoto and Grammar on Wednesday to decide the placings in the pool.
