3X3 Tertiary Champs 2022: Day 2 Recap, Waikato Men’s and Lincoln Women’s Teams Claim Victory

The 3×3 National Tertiary Champions have been crowned today, with the Waikato Men’s and Lincoln Women’s teams taking out the respective titles.

Men’s Finals

The Waikato men’s squad started off strong, dispatching Otago 21-10 in the quarterfinals before facing Auckland in the semis – pulling out a 21-15 win. That set them up for a finals clash against last year’s runners-ups Lincoln Uni, had had earlier beaten AUT and Canterbury to carve their own path to the grand finals.

The grand final was a spirited affair, with both teams going back and forth early – the lead changing hands multiple times before Waikato pulled away on the strength of their outside shooting and superior rebounding. The winning team of Daniel Dobson, Jack McManaway, Jayden Taufale and Te Maire van der Leden securing Waikato Uni’s first ever grand final win at the 3×3 National Tertiary Champs.

Women’s Finals

The Lincoln women’s team continued their strong run towards the finals on day two, beating Auckland 19-10 in the quarterfinals before downing Massey 20-10 in the semis. Meanwhile Otago would beat AUT and Waikato as part of a string playoff run, setting up these two teams for the grand finals.

Facing up against last year’s runners-up, Otago wouldn’t pose a challenge for the experienced Lincoln squad – the latter earning an easy 21-5 win to claim their 4th 3×3 National Tertiary women’s title in the past five years. Lincoln were led by the dominant inside-outside play of Lauren Hipploite, alongside Rosalia Samia, Kate Herman and Grace McGirr.
