Engaging a representative is an important decision. Working with a BBNZ Accredited Player Representative helps provide confidence that:
- The representative has met BBNZ fit-and-proper person requirements
- Conflicts of interest must be disclosed and managed
- Fees and payment arrangements must be transparent
- Player welfare, safeguarding, and integrity standards apply
- There is a clear complaints and disputes process if issues arise
Our policies and
Code of Conduct underpin these requirements, setting clear standards for safeguarding, integrity, and respectful behaviour.
Accreditation is designed to protect players, particularly young athletes and their families, as they navigate contracts, opportunities, and pathways in New Zealand and overseas.
BBNZ may grant two types of accreditation:
Full Accreditation
Representatives who have met all accreditation requirements and are approved by BBNZ.
Provisional Accreditation
Provisional accreditation may be granted for up to 12 months (with one possible extension). Provisional Accredited Representatives must comply with all requirements of the Charter and clearly disclose their provisional status to players before entering into any agreement. If full accreditation is not achieved within the required timeframe, provisional accreditation will lapse.
All Accredited Player Representatives must comply with the BBNZ Player Representative Charter, including obligations to:
- Act honestly, professionally, and in the best interests of the player
- Disclose and manage actual or potential conflicts of interest
- Clearly explain services, fees, and payment arrangements
- Comply with BBNZ, FIBA, and relevant New Zealand laws
- Meet safeguarding requirements, including when working with players under 20
- Maintain confidentiality and protect player information
- Complete ongoing professional development requirements
Representatives who breach these obligations may be subject to complaints, sanctions, or removal of accreditation.
Accreditation is a privilege, not a right. Applicants must meet BBNZ’s fit-and-proper person standards and demonstrate appropriate experience and competence. All Accredited Player Representatives must comply with the BBNZ Player Representative Charter.
The application process includes:
Approved representatives are added to the BBNZ Accredited Player Representative database.
Application Form
Accredited Player Representatives must not enter into an agreement with a player under 20 years of age without contacting the player’s parent or guardian and receiving consent. Representatives must also meet Children’s Act safety checking and safeguarding requirements.
Players or guardians may raise concerns or make a formal complaint about an Accredited Player Representative. Complaints are managed in accordance with the Disputes and Complaints Procedure set out in Section D of the Charter, including review by an independent decision maker where required.
A Dispute case or Complaint can be submitted via email to bbnz@nz.basketball and must:
a) Not exceed 2000 words;
b) Specify the details of the Dispute or Complaint;
c) If relevant; provide supporting evidence signed by attesting witnesses;
d) Provide the party’s contact details.
For the purpose of the Disputes and Complaints Procedure, which is outlined in Schedule D, there is to be an independent Decision Maker appointed, from time to time, and when needed by BBNZ and notified to the Accredited Representatives.
The Decision Maker shall be an experienced and respected member of the sporting and business or legal community who does not hold (nor has previously held) any position with BBNZ.
Where the Decision Maker finds that a Complaint is made out, he or she may also recommend an appropriate penalty to be imposed by the BBNZ under the Charter.
The Decision Maker shall provide a written decision within ten working days from the date the reply is received. A copy of the written decision will be provided to all parties and to BBNZ.
