The first day of the National Tertiary 3×3 Championships are in the books, with both the Lincoln University Men’s and Women’s teams going unbeaten during pool play.
The Lincoln Women’s team, led by Tall Fern Lauryn Hippolite and Rosalia Samia – who recently signed with the Whai in the Tauihi Women’s League – alongside Kate Herman and Grace McGirr, were rarely troubled during pool play. They dispatched AUT 22-4 in the first game, then dominated Canterbury 16-5 and Victoria 22-8 to go 3-0 on the day.
Meanwhile the Lincoln men’s team handled their opposition with similar ease, beating Massey 20-12, Otago 22-11 and finally Victoria 22-11 to also finish 3-0 in pool play. Their squad features several names familiar to 3X3; with Tanae Lavery and Simon Lafaele both veterans of the 3X3 Quest Tours, Noa Price a returning player from last year’s Tertiary Champs and Phoenix Sorensen – who recently attended last month’s BBNZ U18 National Selection Camp.
These squads now go into tomorrow’s quarter-finals as the respective top seeds, with both teams seeking revenge for losses suffered in the grand final of last year’s Tertiary 3×3 Champs.
The National Tertiary 3×3 Championship continues tomorrow, 15 May 2022, at the Massey University campus courts in Palmerston North. Spectators are welcome to attend, with Court 1 being Live Steamed on the Sky Sport Next YouTube channel.
