There’s plenty happening on the last day of the 3×3 National Championships for 2023, so we will do our best to break it down for you. Semi-Finals will take place in the morning, while Finals will then be scattered across the afternoon from 1:40pm onwards.
SENIOR ELITE
For the Girls Senior Elite grade, Tauranga Girls will take on a strong Hamilton Girls side, while Westlake Girls take on St Andrews Blue. Tauranga hasn’t dropped a game all tournament, holding Epsom Girls to five points in their Quarter-Final, while Hamilton went on a bumpier road, losing three games total in pool play but beating Hastings Girls 7-5 to move through to the Semi-Finals.
St Andrew’s finished 3rd in their pool but took a narrow victory over Nga Taiatea 9-6 to progress through to the next playoff round. Westlake dropped a single game and finished top of their pool, beating Manurewa High by one point in a close 12-11 matchup to progress through to the Semi-Finals.
The Boys Elite was no different. Two Auckland schools will face off in the first Semi-Final, with Rosmini Red taking on Mount Albert Grammar, while the second Semi-Final is the product of St Johns Eagles and St Thomas College. Rosmini finished second in their pool with one loss to their name, while St Thomas came in on top. Both teams took victories comfortably to ensure Semi-Final placements, however Saint Kentigern almost called game in their Semi-Final against St Thomas, but by a slender two points, the South Island based school pulled ahead.
Finishing top of their pool, Mount Albert Grammar only lost one game throughout pool play. They narrowly passed Aquinas College in their Quarter-Final, winning 9-8 to push them onwards in the competition. St John’s finished top of their pool on tiebreaker, sending them to play Rotorua Boys in the Quarter-Finals. With all games coming in close, this was no exception. Rotorua wouldn’t be able to capitalise on their chances and St John’s managed to climb their way into the Semi-Finals.
JUNIOR ELITE
The Junior Boys Elite grade semi-finals are fast approaching, with four top teams set to battle it out for a place in the grand finals. In Semi-Final one, St Johns Falcons will take on Hamilton Boys in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Meanwhile, in Semi-Final two, St Andrews will go up against Tauranga Boys.
The Junior Girls Elite Semi-Finals are one of the first of the day, with four top teams set to battle it out for a place in the grand finals. In Semi-Final one, Rotorua Girls will take on Rangitoto in what promises to be an exciting encounter. Meanwhile, in semi-final two, Westlake Girls will go up against Hamilton Girls.
The stakes are high in all matches, with only two teams able to progress to the Grand Final. The winning teams will face each other from each division in the ultimate showdown, where they will compete to be crowed champions of 3×3.
