Justin Toebes started his contribution to basketball in 1973 as a player in Wellington. In 1994 he was voted onto the Wellington Basketball Association Executive. In 1995 he became the president of the Wellington Basketball Association, a position he held for the next 12 years. After the Newtown Stadium burnt down in 1999, he started the campaign to have a new stadium built and through his persistence Wellington now has a 12 court regional stadium in Kilbirnie. He has also been a part-owner and board member of the Saints NBL team and an NBL Board representative for five years. He joined the Basketball New Zealand board in 2002. As vice-president from 2003-2006 he drafted a new constitution and successfully worked for the return of the NBL as part of Basketball New Zealand. He also represented New Zealand on the FIBA Oceania Board from 2003-2006.
