The Aon New Zealand U17 Men outclassed Guam 104-19 at the FIBA Under 17 Oceania Championship last night.
The Kiwi’s second win in as many days was built on solid defence whilst at the offensive end, the team had several scoring contributions led by Robbie Coman’s 16 points.
Guam actually scored the first basket of the game on their opening possession, but New Zealand replied with 28 unanswered points to lead 28-3 at quarter time.
New Zealand began the second period in equally dominant fashion, peeling off the first 19 points of the frame. Connor Ngan and Coman both made threes as the lead ballooned out to 49-6 at half-time. Coman and fellow forward Campbell Atkinson led the scoring at the interval with eight points apiece.
The plucky Guam team scored eleven points in the third quarter but it was still a period won comfortably by the Kiwis who took a 75-17 lead into the final ten minutes.
Zeke Stallworth brought up the Kiwis century with a dunk before Finn Lally’s triple put the exclamation mark on an emphatic New Zealand victory ahead of their clash with Australia.
The game against Australia is tomorrow (Wednesday 12pm) at midday and the winner will claim the top spot in Pool A.
Regardless of the result, both teams have booked themselves semi-final berths on Friday.
The top-two finishers at the FIBA Under 17 Oceania Championship advance to the FIBA Under 18 Asian Championship in 2020, which is the official qualifier to the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup.
