Schick Championships Day One wrap-up

The Schick Championships got underway in Palmerston North, with over 800 players from 62 schools gathering at the Central Energy Trust Arena.

The National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships had 62 games take place on opening day. Pool A in the AA competition was hailed as the Pool to watch and the very first game became today’s talking point.

The three pools that only had one game today were ‘AA’ Girls Pools A and C, as well as ‘AA’ Boys Pool D. St Peter’s, Cambridge in Pool A, St Mary’s in Pool C and St John’s, Hamilton all went through unscathed with one win.

Schick Premierships Zone 3 runner’s up St Patrick’s, Silverstream defeated Cashmere 87-83 in what some would say was the upset of the day in ‘AA’ Boys Pool B action. Cashmere then turned it around in their second bout and toppled Zone 3 winner’s Scots College 97-89 in the last round of play.

In ‘AA’ Boys Pool C action, Tauranga Boys’ prevailed over Hamilton Boys’ High 82-59. Pre-tournament favourites St Kent’s won both their opening two games in Pool A, while Napier Boys’ High had a big win over Zone 4 winner’s Middleton Grange to also go two from two.

Crossing over to the ‘AA’ Girls competition, Zone 3 champions Sacred Heart, New Plymouth and Zone 1 runner’s up Westlake Girls’ High had two wins in two games in Pool B on day one. Queen Margaret College and Hamilton Girls’ High sit atop Pool D after recording a pair of convincing wins.

Moving back to the boys but this time in the ‘A’ grade, Opunake High School and St Kevin’s College are undefeated in Pool A, with Manukura and Mana College in Pool B also yet to taste failure.

In ‘A’ Girls Pool A, Mercury Bay Area School and Tararua College finished día uno without a loss. Kavanagh College and Te Aroha College in Pool B have also set themselves up nicely for day two with two victories.
