National Tertiary Championships – Day One Recap

Day one of the National Tertiary Championships tipped off at AUT yesterday, with 14 games played across the Men’s and Women’s pools.

Men’s Pool A

ROUND 1 – AUT 80, Lincoln University Men 72

In the first game of the day, AUT beat Lincoln University Men 80-72 in a hard-fought win. For AUT, Joshua Kooiman led all scores with 26 points – fuelled by 4 triples – while Ryan Laumatia earned 20 and Jesse Manuel had 15. Jarred Burnett led Lincoln with 19 points, while Manawatu Jet Pafe Momoisea scored 18 points (including a trio of threes) and Phoenix Sorensen tallied 10.

ROUND 1 – University of Otago 90, Massey University 50

Next up saw University of Otago dominating throughout to earn a 40 point victory over Massey University. Matthew Pyper led all scores with 21 points for Otago, while Jordan Perez tallied 13 and Robert Coman and Quinn Ritchie earned 12 apiece. Massey had Jonty Vink and David Jovanovic both score in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively, while Reuben Davis racked up 9.

ROUND 2 – AUT 84, University of Otago 76

AUT picked up their second straight win on Day One, with a tight 84-76 victory over Otago. Joshua Kooiman again impressed for AUT, this time with 32 points (including 3 triples), while Jayden Boucher tallied 19 and Ryan Laumatia picked up 14 points of his own. For Otago, Matthew Pyper scored 21 points for his second straight game, while Otago Nuggets forward Robert Coman tallied 11.

ROUND 2 – Lincoln University Men 74, Massey University 67

Lincoln University picked up their first win of the day with a 74-67 victory over Massey University – who dropped to 0-2. Lincoln was led by Pita Maxwell-Topia’s 18 points (including 4 from downtown) while Jarred Burnett had 12 and Jack Churcher and Corban Mason both dropped in 8 points. Ronan Lethbridge paced Massey with his 16 points as one of four players in double figures; joined by Zavier Pearn (14), David Jovanovic (13) and Jonty Vink (10).

Men’s Pool A standings – Day One

Men’s Pool B

ROUND 1 – Victoria University of Wellington 87, University of Canterbury 70

Pool B tipped off with Victoria University easily beating University of Canterbury 87-70 – with Vic Uni’s Corban Laban-Palmer racking up 30 points to lead all scores, while Jacob Carr earned 16 and Trent Clarkson scored his 15 points all from behind the arc. Canterbury was paced by Nash Biggs and his 22 points (3 from downtown), while Fletcher Arnold tallied 11 and Josh Lawson with 10.

ROUND 1 – University of Auckland 84, University of Waikato 78

The University of Auckland came out on top in a tense back and forth affair with the University of Waikato. Reuben Fitzgerald led all scores with 23 points, one of four Auckland players in double figures alongside Mikaere Watene (15), Daniel Powell (14) and Jeremy Mcintosh (10). Daniel Dobson led Waikato with 18 points, while Beau Hippolite (17) Te Maire Van Der Leden (16) and Jayden Taufale (9) combined to hit 10 triples between them.

ROUND 2 – Victoria University of Wellington 87, University of Waikato 78

Victoria University picked up their second win of the day – and Waikato their second loss – in a high-scoring game. Corban Laban-Palmer continued his hot scoring for Vic Uni with 29 points, supported by Reuben Natusch’s 27 (3 triples) and 11 points from Jordan Lindbom. Waikato had balanced scoring on their side, with six players hitting double figures; led by 13 from Beau Hippolite, 12 from Daniel Dobson, Corban Paewai with 10 and 11 points apiece from Jayden Taufale, Te Manawanui Tawhara-Crown and Tristan Karaka.

ROUND 2 – University of Auckland 94, University of Canterbury 83

The University of Auckland remained unbeaten with a 94-83 win over Canterbury, who dropped to the bottom of Pool B with their second loss. Reuben Fitzgerald again led the way for Auckland with 25 points; Daniel Powell with 18, Jeremy Mcintosh with 16 and Joseph Wuthrich with 11, as Auckland nailed 12 treys as a team.  Nash Biggs was again hot for Canterbury with 31 points, with him and Tom Higgins (21 points) both making four triples. Fletcher Arnold also had 19 points.

Men’s Pool B standings – Day One

Women’s Pool A

ROUND 1 – Victoria University of Wellington 87, University of Auckland 49

Victoria University ran away with a dominant 87-49 win over University of Auckland in the first women’s game of the day. Vic Uni was led by the duo of Isabella Tait-Jones (24 points) and Tokomanawa Queen Jacinta Beckley (23 points), with both players hitting 4 triples. Freya Newton also had 11. For Auckland, only Natasha Ah-Hing cracked double figures with 11, while Audrey Taupule Po’e-Tofaeono, Sophia Redgrove and Casey Leyson each chipped in 6.

ROUND 1 – Victoria University of Wellington 88, University of Canterbury 59

Victoria University continued their dominance in the second game, hitting 12 triples in a 30-point win over the University of Canterbury. Jacinta Beckley top-scored with 26 points for Vic Uni, while Freya Newton stepped up with 23 and Sariah Penese scored 14. For Canterbury, Riva Pitman scored 20 points, supported by Eniselina Pale’s 16 and 11 from Te Rina Heta-Cooper.

ROUND 1 – University of Canterbury 77, University of Auckland 65

The University of Canterbury picked up their first win of the day, with a 77-65 victory over winless University of Auckland. Five players hit double figures for Canterbury, led by Grace Cameron’s 21 points, 16 from Janayah Lewis, Emily Knight with 13, Te Rina Heta-Cooper 12 and Eniselina Pale with 10. Auckland was paced by Piper Manolas and her 15 points, while Raykesha-Line Burgess-Fiatau chipped in 12.

Women’s Pool A standings – Day One

Women’s Pool B

ROUND 1 – AUT 99, University of Waikato 77

AUT picked up a solid 99-77 win over the University of Waikato in the first Pool B game of the day. AUT’s Luye Murphy hit 5 triples for her 18 points, while Summer Jean Motufoua had 17, Azure Anderson with 16, Trinity Paeu scoring 14 and Mele Latu chipping in 11. For Waikato, Abby Crane racked up 20 points (including 5 from downtown) while  Kayla Manuirirangi had 19. Mayako Taingahue and Jasmine Mccleery each had 11.

ROUND 1 – University of Waikato 99, University of Otago 77

University of Waikato followed up their loss with a redemptive win over the University of Otago, in a tight 86-82 victory. Kayla Manuirirangi was scorching for Waikato in the win with 37 points – hitting 12 of Waikato’s 25 free throws – while Jasmine Mccleery had 11 and Junior Tall Fern Aria Cowley scored 10. Tyler Mitchell led Otago with 24 points (including 4 triples), Olivia O’neill had 18 points and Millie Simpson with 11.

ROUND 1 – AUT 70, University of Otago 65

AUT picked up their second win of the day, beating the University of Otago and dropping them to 0-2. Azure Anderson led four AUT players in double figures with 17, joined by Summer Jean Motufoua (16), Luye Murphy (15) and 10 points from Trinity Paeu. Tyler Mitchell racked up 4 triples for her 18 points in the Otago loss, supported by Millie Simpson’s 15 and 10 from Olivia O’neill.
