Coaching comes in many forms. Maybe you’re helping your tamariki improve in the back yard, shooting hoops at the local court, or coaching a school team. Whatever it looks like for you, you don’t need a qualification or playing career to get started. It starts with simply showing up, and we’re here to support you with the rest.
Basketball is growing fast in Aotearoa, but we need more people like you to help keep up. Right now, around 70% of kids drop out of organised sport by age 13. A positive coaching experience can change that. You don’t need to know every play. You just need to show up, encourage your players, and help them have fun.
A free all-in-one coaching app with ready-to-use session plans, drills and activities to help you coach with confidence from day one. →
Self-paced coaching modules you can work through in your own time, covering everything from coaching fundamentals to player development. →
An injury prevention and player wellbeing programme with simple warm-up routines and resources to help keep your players safe and game-ready all season. →
Research shows young people who take part in coached sport training are 48% more likely to have good wellbeing than those who don’t. Plus, every extra hour with a coach increases that likelihood even further. Coaches help build confidence, strengthen relationships, and create an impact that goes well beyond the court.
Local Associations are the heart of community basketball. They run the teams, competitions and programmes that bring the game to life. Whether you want to get involved, ask a question, or just find out what’s happening near you, your local Association is a great place to start.
You don’t need any formal qualifications to get started as a community coach. Basketball New Zealand provides all the tools and resources you need to coach with confidence, even if you’ve never watched a game.
Don’t worry. You’ll learn as you go, and so will your players. CoachMate has everything you need to get up to speed. Local Associations are also a great resource. They run the teams, competitions and programmes that bring the game to life, so they’re a great place to ask questions or find out more.
Community coaching is about creating a positive environment, not knowing every play. Your enthusiasm and support matters far more than your technical knowledge.
Absolutely. Many of our community coaches started with zero experience. Our resources, tools and local Association network are there to support you.
Use our Association Finder to locate your nearest club or basketball programme.
We get it, life is busy. That’s exactly why we’ve partnered with CoachMate. No trawling YouTube or digging up outdated PDFs for training ideas. Everything you need to plan a session is right there in one app, saving you time and helping you show up prepared. Most community coaches find that with the right tools, coaching fits more easily into their week than they expected.
