Draw Confirmed For U16 Women’s Asian Champs

BBNZ has confirmed the draw for the FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championships – held in Amman, Jordan from 10-16 July 2023 – along with a squad update.

Division A of the U16 Women’s Asian Champs sees New Zealand as one of ten teams competing for FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Champs title, along with Australia, Samoa, China, Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, India and Syria.

The U16 New Zealand Women’s team will play a grueling four games over five days at the Prince Hamza Hall, Sports City Amman; taking on Group B opponents India, Japan, Samoa and China. If they can finish top two of their pool, they will advance to semi-finals on day six.

This tournament is key as it serves as a qualifier event for the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup, with the top four teams heading to Mexico in July 2024. Meanwhile three teams (the last two ranked teams from Asia and the last ranked team from Oceania) will be relegated to Division B at the completion of this tournament.

There is also a change to the U16 New Zealand Women’s team, with Hana Paterson replacing Kodee Williams-Sefo in the squad.
