Basketball New Zealand has named two strong teams for the FIBA U18 3×3 Asia Cup this year.
The event will be held in Cyberjaya, Malaysia on 22 to 24 August.
The men’s team will be defending their 2018 Gold Medal, while the women’s team will want to go one better from their 2018 Asia Cup Silver Medal.
The New Zealand U18 Women (ranked 7) are grouped with Turkmenistan (13) and a team yet to be named in the first-placed qualification spot. This is a different team from the FIBA U18 World Cup team that placed a phenomenal second in Mongolia in June.
The New Zealand U18 Men (ranked 28) are grouped with Mongolia (8) and Sri Lanka (46).
With last year’s successes, both teams will be a target for other nations. The Kiwis’ goal will be to win and generate as many FIBA 3×3 ranking points as possible, which go towards federation’ points and count when attempting to qualify teams for World Cups in each age group.
